The Magic Lake Property Owners Society (MLPOS) Annual General Meeting is usually held on the last weekend of September.
MLPOS Board of Directors meets on the 2nd Monday of each month at 3:00 pm at the Community Room of the Pender Island Elementary School. Everyone is Welcome. There are no meetings in July. Note that due to logistical problems the meeting time and date may be changed on occasion, so check the Pender Post and this website for those announcements.
See the Pender Post for the monthly events schedule that may be of interest to MLPOS members.
THE THIEVES BAY PHOTO ALBUM
Have you checked out the photo album on this website? It contains mostly interesting photos of the early days of Thieves Bay Marina as submitted by Brian Starkey. We also would like to include photos of members with their boats, such as the one photo already included. Please send us a photo of you with your Thieves Bay-moored boat by sending an email here.

The MLPOS Office Manager is now Joanna Rogers. 629.3550.
MARINA VOLUNTEERS NEEDED!
The marina managers have a 'wish list' of projects to be done which need volunteers to complete. Brian Starkey is the marina special projects manager. Contact him for projects that you might be able to help him with. Call him at 629-8356 or send an email by clicking here.

We had a theft from a boat in D-18 (September 2007). A compass was stolen.
Be extra vigilant and report suspicious activity to the RCMP.

APRIL 2008 MLPOS MEMBERSHIP LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT
TO ALL M.L.P.O.S. MEMBERS:
It is time to renew our annual M.L.P.O.S. memberships. Your membership renewal application for 2008 to 2009 is enclosed. Boaters and tennis players are also requested to submit renewal fees at this time. Your prompt response will be greatly appreciated.
Boaters, please remember that proof of $1,000,000.00 liability insurance on your vessel must accompany your renewal. If you do not provide proof of insurance, your moorage contract will not be accepted and your slip will be assigned to someone else. The waiting list for moorage is getting longer each year as new residents move into Magic Lake Estates and the word gets out about the fabulous facility we have at bargain basement moorage rates. Wally Foster, our Marina Manager, has already been able to accommodate quite a few – including five up-grades and eight new boats.
The Marina is in good condition despite all of the winter storms and exceptionally high tides. If you can help with the dock work, please call Brian Starkey, Marine Projects manager at 629-8356 and volunteer your handy services.
Since Thieves Bay is one of the best land-based whale watching areas in the Southern Gulf Islands, we encourage everyone to enjoy the view and the orca antics but please remember there is no parking allowed on any part of the road leading to the breakwater. This is for emergency access only and violators will be towed. The designated loading zone is meant for short term loading and unloading not for parking. With your help and the new signage there were very few towed cars last year. Please, help us by continuing to park in the designated parking lot and by reminding others to do the same.
I wanted to take this opportunity to give some background surrounding the activity at Mouat Park.
Two years ago a neighbour reminded us that there was a covenant on the property and, therefore, we needed to keep the trees at 25 ft. Since then, we conferred on-site with several arborists. In March of 2007 we asked the Pender Island Conservancy Association (PICA) to give us advice. They suggested, with respect to the covenant, removing the firs in the south and centre, keeping the hawthorn, removing the dead deciduous tree, and trying to trim some of the other branches to open windows for views. Everyone noted that to top the trees at 25 ft. would leave only stumps and that because of previous topping and tangled undergrowth, the cost of selectively cutting and trimming the trees would be excessive. As a non-profit organization our budget did not allow for costly trimming.
We consulted with the contractor we hired and requested that he do his best to show consideration for the smaller trees and undergrowth. Unfortunately, he was not able to be as selective as we would have liked. Our goal was to develop a plan for this land in concurrence with the covenant but without damaging the natural habitat beyond recovery. The MLPOS Executive has met with a group of Storm Crescent neighbours and have identified a volunteer committee consisting of a landscape architect, a naturescape consultant, and other interested people, that will develop a plan for re-forestation and habitat recovery with indigenous plants.
The MLPOS Executive has written to the Islands Trust regarding the issue of road safety in the Magic Lake Estates area. We understand that the roads are not within the jurisdiction of the Islands Trust, however, there is a formal protocol that allows for consultation with the Ministry of Transportation. In response to our letter, the Islands Trust has agreed with our assessment of the unsafe roads and has proposed to arrange a meeting with the Ministry of Transport, including MLPOS representation, to discuss road safety issues. We will keep you informed through the Pender Post articles.
The Tennis Courts are always a great place to meet friends and enjoy a good rally. Michael Wiley keeps encouraging more and more people to join! So far we have 98 steady tennis players
Once again, the forecast seems to point to a hot dry summer that will put pressure on the limited water supply we have in Magic Lake Estates. Water conservation is everyone’s responsibility, so please do your part and conserve at every opportunity. Alternative water collection devices - like cisterns to hold rainwater runoff from your roof – are incredibly efficient and effective. Also, hot, dry summers ignite our fear of fires. Please try to compost or chip yard waste. If you choose to burn, please burn small, hot fires. Never burn green wood either inside or outdoors, wait for the debris to dry out even if this means waiting until later in the spring or until next Fall. And remember, it is illegal to burn garbage.
The “3rd All Community Garage Sale” will be on Saturday May 10th, from 10:00am to 2:00pm. Once again, all proceeds will be donated to the Community Health Centre’s Building Fund. Book a table by calling Judy Teague at 629-6843.
We’re also looking forward to our “Summer Community Picnic”. The plans are just in the early stages but the date is August 5th, starting around 4:30pm. More details will be advertised later in the summer. Give Judy Teague a call at 629-6843 to share ideas or volunteer to help!!!
And, last but definitely not least, we want to extend our
Sincere Thanks and Gratitude to Jenny Brummelkamp
Jenny has been the Office Manager for the Magic Lake Property Owners Society for 23 years and in that capacity has provided a reliable, consistent and dedicated resource for the ever-changing board members. Although her decision to retire was not an easy one, she felt it was time to let someone else take over. We will sadly miss Jenny!!!
Jenny’s retirement leaves the Office Manager position vacant and we invite anyone interested to send in their resume. This is the only position in MLPOS that is salaried. The job description can be viewed on the Thieves Bay website or a copy can be picked up in the Magic Lake Property Society’s folder in the realty office. Resumes may also be dropped off in the folder or given to any of the Directors. As Jenny is leaving in May, we would like to have all resumes in by April 15th.
We are all looking forward to a very busy summer and we thank all members for their involvement and participation in keeping Magic Lake Estates a great community! Last year we represented 430 members. That’s a strong and effective voice! Encourage your neighbours to join MLPOS – it’s the best $20 they’ll ever spend!!
Sincerely,
Sue Bailey, President
