ORCA DAY 2nd annual event will be held at Thieves Bay Park Saturday July 24 from 1-5pm. Event includes speakers, information booths, byo picnic, and hopefully... orcas! The Thieves Bay marina breakwater is one of the best places to watch orcas in the Gulf Islands. Make sure to park in the lot and not along the marina access road.
MARINA SLIP RENEWALS WERE MAILED OUT APRIL 6 AND WERE DUE BY MAY 1. See the President's letter, below.
The marina managers have a 'wish list' of projects to be done which need volunteers to complete. Brian Starkey is the marina special projects manager. Contact him for projects that you might be able to help him with. Call him at 629-8356 or send an email by clicking here.
PCOC CARD NOW REQUIRED!
All operators of powered craft must carry proof of competency at all times as of September 15, 2009. Violators are subject to a $250 fine. You can write the Pleasure Craft Operators Card (PCOC) exam through the local Power & Sail Squadron. Call 250.629.6638.
DEADHEAD MARKERS
Markers consisting of modified golf clubs with flags are available to mark dangerous deadheads. They are available at the marina building.

Be extra vigilant and report suspicious activity to the RCMP.

April 2010
TO ALL M.L.P.O.S. MEMBERS:
It is time to renew our annual M.L.P.O.S. memberships. Your membership renewal application for 2010 – 2011 is enclosed. Boaters and tennis players are also requested to submit renewal fees at this time. Your prompt response will be greatly appreciated. For more information you can always check this website.
Boaters, please remember that proof of $1,000,000.00 liability insurance on your vessel must accompany your renewal. If you do not provide proof of insurance, your moorage contract will not be accepted and your slip will be assigned to someone else. The waiting list for moorage is getting longer each year as new residents move into Magic Lake Estates.
The Marina suffered a bit of damage this winter. A dead-head found its way under dock E at high tide and as the tide went down, it pushed the dock up, crimping the wood and damaging the floats. The dock is roped off at the moment but we will be working on repairs in April. If you can help with the dock work, please call Brian Starkey, Marine Projects manager at 629-8356 and volunteer your handy services. Also, we believe a fire extinguisher was stolen off the docks since there was no evidence of its need. We have had so little theft that this was quite unexpected.
This spring we look forward to the annual return of the Orcas. Since Thieves Bay is one of the best land-based whale watching areas in the Southern Gulf Islands, we encourage everyone to enjoy the view and the orca antics but please remember there is no parking allowed on any part of the road leading to the breakwater. This is for emergency access only and violators will be towed. The designated loading zone is meant for short term loading and unloading not for parking. Following the success of last years Orca Day, the Pender Island Orca Day Committee has set the date of Saturday, July 24th for this year’s event.
We have received a few inquiries
regarding the possibility of creating an Off-Leash Dog Park on the East side of
the Tennis Courts. I would
sincerely appreciate hearing your thoughts on this – whether you think it’s a
good idea or not please email me at sbaileyonpender@shaw.ca
or write. One of the major
concerns, of course, will be the invariable dog poop pickup issue. We expect that animal owners would be
respectful and responsible. Actually, poop is not appreciated anywhere – on the
side of the roads where we walk, or in the parks where children play, or on the
breakwater, or docks - so please pick up after your animals.
The weather forecast predicts an extremely hot, dry summer that will put pressure on the limited water supply we have in Magic Lake Estates. Although our water supply is at 100% this spring, water conservation is everyone’s responsibility, so please do your part and conserve at every opportunity. Alternative water collection devices - like cisterns to hold rainwater runoff from your roof – are incredibly efficient and effective. Also, hot, dry summers ignite our fear of fires. Please try to compost or chip yard waste. If you choose to burn, please burn small, hot fires. Never burn green wood either inside or outdoors, wait for the debris to dry out even if this means waiting until later in the spring or until next Fall. And remember, it is illegal to burn garbage. Smoke from your burns wafting through your neighbour’s home on a crisp sunny day is really not very neighbourly and leaves many shut inside because of the toxic air.
We are all looking forward to a very busy summer and we thank all members for their involvement and participation in keeping Magic Lake Estates a great community! Last year we represented 430 members. That’s a strong and effective voice! Encourage your neighbours to join MLPOS.
Sincerely,
Sue Bailey, President
